Government travel bosses are urging British tourists not to take photos of or join protests sweeping northern Italy - as some demonstrations descended into 'violent riots and looting'.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated their advice yesterday, noting visitors should expect an increased police and military personnel presence in Milan due to the unrest.
The Government also warned that more demonstrations may take place in major cities, and travellers should avoid any protests, political gatherings or marches taking place in the area.
Tourists are being advised if near a demonstration to follow the instructions of the police, leave the area and don't stop to watch or photograph disorder.
A spokesperson for The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "Demonstrations can happen with little or no warning in cities.
"Most demonstrations are peaceful but can change with little warning.
"Avoid any protests, political gatherings or marches. If you're near a demonstration, follow the instructions of the police and local authorities and leave the area.
"Don't stop to watch or photograph disorder or police activity.
"Check local news and official travel information for updates. Transport services maybe cancelled at short notice.
"Take care on public transport, in crowded areas and in city centres, including main train and metro stations.
"Be particularly careful with your belongings on public transport, at airports and at tourist sites and local bars, cafes and restaurants."
Travel advice issued yesterday [October 21] also warned travellers of ongoing strike action in Italy.
They warned a national strike is planned to take place on Friday October 30, which is expected to cause widespread travel disruption.
It's expected to affect transport systems, and travellers are being urged to check with their local provider for the latest information and travel updates.
