Long-awaited repairs to a coastal access route are finally due to begin.
South Tyneside Council has confirmed that plans to replace the steps at Marsden Bay in South Shields - closed since December due to safety concerns - will kick start next month.
The "challenging" £600,000+ project will be carried out by Esh Construction and is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Karen Pittuck, lead member for highways, neighbourhoods and community safety at South Tyneside Council, said: "We know how important these steps are, both as an access route at Marsden Bay and to the operation of the Marsden Grotto.
"I’m pleased that we are now in a position to move ahead with their full replacement.
"This is a challenging coastal location and it has been important that we took the time needed to properly assess the condition of the steps and develop a safe and lasting solution.
"The new structure has been designed to withstand the harsh coastal conditions while helping to minimise the need for ongoing repairs and maintenance."
The Marsden steps, located next to the Grotto, have been closed since December after inspections revealed significant safety issues.
Their coastal setting has exposed them to storm tides, saltwater and erosion.
Specialist surveys and design work have been carried out to ensure a long-term solution that is robust and low-maintenance.
The closure has also impacted the Marsden Grotto, as the steps double as an emergency escape route.
Although construction will not be affected by tides, the use of cranes means work may be delayed during periods of high wind.
Alternative access to the bay remains available via the Redwell Bank steps, which can be used when tides allow.

Visitors are advised to check tide times and follow safety signage.
The Council previously invested £289,000 in the Redwell Bank steps, which were completed in 2022.
The new Marsden steps are expected to reopen in spring 2027.
