A Darlington speciality food retailer that first opened at the turn of the millennium continues to attract customers more than 25 years later.
The Cheese & Wine Shop was established in 1999 by Terry Farr and has since become one of the town's best-known independent food businesses.
The business has changed hands several times over the years, but its focus has remained the same: offering artisan cheeses, wines and delicatessen products that cannot typically be found in larger retailers.
Over the past 25 years, the shop has traded through some of the biggest changes to hit Britain's high streets.
When it first opened in 1999, online shopping was still in its infancy and independent specialist retailers played an important role in introducing customers to products from around the UK and Europe.
Since then, consumer habits have been transformed by internet shopping, supermarket expansion and changing spending patterns.
Despite those challenges, The Cheese & Wine Shop has survived while many independent retailers have disappeared.
After the business was saved from closure by new owner Caroline Elliot in 2024, she described Christmas as the shop's busiest time of year, with customers queueing for lengthy periods to secure their festive cheese orders and describing the business as a Darlington tradition.
The business built a reputation for its carefully selected range of cheeses, wines and deli products, while also developing a loyal customer base in Darlington and beyond.

In recent years, the shop has expanded beyond traditional retail by hosting cheese and wine tasting events, helping introduce new customers to artisan produce and specialist food experiences.
Those events have proved popular, with tasting nights regularly selling out. It's also super popular during the festive season.
The retailer has also developed strong links with producers across the UK and Europe, while continuing to champion local cheesemakers and regional products.
