Families can enjoy free and ticketed half-term activities at County Durham’s new cultural venue.

The Light will host autumn-themed events from Wednesday, October 28, to Sunday, November 1.

The programme includes creative workshops, nature trails and a Halloween disco.

Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration, and high street, said: "There’s no shortage of things to do at The Light this autumn.

"We recognise that it can be an expensive time of year in the lead up to Halloween and Christmas, and that’s why several of these sessions are free.

"We hope these sessions demonstrate that The Light is not just an art and culture venue, but also a great space for activities and events.

"Combined with the café and shop, our new venue will be a great destination during the colder months."

Free drop-in activities include an autumn nature trail where children can explore the grounds and spot wildlife.

On Sunday, November 1, visitors can join a poppy installation led by artist Betty Barnet Brown.

The interactive artwork uses thousands of woollen and fabric poppies donated to Durham Market’s Remembrance appeal. It will hang at The Light for Remembrance Day under the title For our Tomorrow they gave their Today.

Other activities include a leaf-lantern workshop on Wednesday, October 28.

The £6 workshop is for children aged 5 and over, who will make glowing autumn lanterns from foraged leaves.

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

A Halloween disco runs on Thursday, October 29, from 5pm to 7pm. Tickets cost £6 per child.

The disco will feature face painting, music, snacks and a prize for the best-dressed child.
