A MAIN road in a North Yorkshire town is to closed to traffic tomorrow (Friday).

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is investing in the ageing metal gas network in Norton to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the local community for years to come.

To enable the work, which has been planned in collaboration with North Yorkshire Council, to continue to be carried out safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to temporarily close part of Welham Road, outside No. 42, from 9am on Friday 23 October until the evening of Saturday 24 October.

The closure will then be lifted and multi-way traffic lights will be in place at Park Road and Welham Road.

Residents leaving Park Road will still be able to turn left at the junction with Welham Road towards Malton, but will not be able to turn right.

Road users south of the Park Road junction will need to follow a diversion. This will be the same for cars and HGVs.

Advance warning signs will be in place, and the diversion route will be clearly signposted.

Stewart Whitehead, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We know this closure and diversion will cause significant disruption for residents, businesses and everyone who relies on this busy route, and we’re genuinely sorry for the inconvenience and additional journey time it will create.

“We have carefully planned the work to keep the closure as short as possible, and the diversion will be clearly signposted. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while we complete this essential upgrade to keep the local gas network safe and reliable for years to come."
