In a moving tribute, they said: "Erin Bennett was the most amazing beautiful woman and our whole world has been shattered beyond belief.
"Erin was not only a big sister and daughter, she was also our best friend.
"She lit up the room with her contagious smile and was loved by everyone."
Her family said Erin had recently graduated with a degree in criminology and psychology and was preparing to begin training with Northumbria Police after securing her dream job as a detective.
They said: "She was the most caring, thoughtful, wonderful woman and was so excited about her future after gaining her degree in criminology and psychology.
"She had recently got her dream job in Northumbria Police and was about to start her training to become a detective.
"She loved her family and was a massive part of it.
"Losing Erin has left a huge hole that can never be filled.
"Please respect our family's privacy at this awful time."
Erin's boyfriend, Craig, also paid an emotional tribute.
He said: "Erin you are the most beautiful, amazing and loveable girlfriend in the world.
"You lit up the room anytime you walked in with your beautiful smile and your charm.
"You were the light of my life, and I will always hold you in my heart.
"I love you always and forever my love."
Police and paramedics were called to the major road near Felton shortly after midday on Sunday following the collision involving a white Nissan Qashqai, a red Renault Clio and a white Tesla Model 3.
Erin, who was driving the Renault Clio, died at the scene.
The driver of the Qashqai suffered minor injuries and was later discharged from hospital, while a passenger sustained serious injuries but has since also been discharged.
Four occupants of the Tesla suffered injuries not believed to be serious.
The crash led to the closure of the A1 in both directions for around nine hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and carried out investigations.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and have appealed for witnesses, particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from before the crash, to come forward.
Sergeant Greg Huntley said: "Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic collision.
"We will continue to offer them all the support they need and would ask that their privacy is respected at this time."
