Police officer ‘sexually assaulted three women at York nightclub’

A police officer has gone on trial accused of sexually assaulting three women at a York nightclub.

Martin Brough, 44, is alleged to have sexually touched the women in separate incidents on the dance floor at Pop World in December 2024, York Crown Court heard.

Mr Brough, a West Yorkshire Police officer from Leeds, appeared for the first day of his trial yesterday (Tuesday) when barrister Michael Morley opened the case for the prosecution.

Mr Morley showed the jury footage of a packed dance floor at the club in George Hudson Street where the alleged assaults are said to have occurred.

The footage showed Mr Brough being escorted out of the club after the alleged incidents.

Mr Brough, of Ibbetson Oval, Morley, was later quizzed by police but made no comment.

He was charged with three counts of sexual assault but denied all allegations.

Mr Brough claims he was merely pulling on the clothing of one of the alleged victims.

Regarding the allegations made by the other two women, he claimed that if there was any physical contact, it was “purely accidental”.

The prosecution claims that Mr Brough intentionally touched the first woman on the bottom and that this was “sexual in nature” and without her consent.

Mr Morley said that one of the other women was also touched on the bottom and “we say it is sexual touching”.

He said the issues in the case were intent, consent and whether the touching was sexual in nature.

He said it was the prosecution’s case that there was intent and that there was no consent from either of the three women, none of whom can be named for legal reasons.

The trial continues.
