A grammar school has been named among the best in England in a national league table released today.

Ripon Grammar School (RGS), based in North Yorkshire, was ranked 42nd in The Daily Telegraph’s latest league table of selective state schools - earning a score of 38 out of 40 points.

It was the only grammar school in both the North and Yorkshire to make the top 50 and offers both day and boarding provision.

Jonathan Webb, headmaster of RGS, said: "This result reflects the hard work and ambition of our pupils, the dedication of our staff and the support of our families.

"It is particularly pleasing to see our academic performance recognised alongside the breadth of opportunities we offer as a co-educational state grammar school.

"While academic achievement is hugely important, we believe a great education is about much more than examination results.

"We want every pupil to discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities and leave RGS well equipped for the next stage of their lives."

The school’s A-level results were rated above both national and local averages.

They also pride themselves on their strong emphasis on personal development alongside academic success - offering opportunities in sport, music, drama, and pastoral care.

Ben Butcher, data editor at The Telegraph, said: "Grammar schools represent the pinnacle of state education in England.

"With 163 of them scattered across the country, these schools are fiercely competitive, academically brilliant and so influential that they actively push up house prices as parents attempt to muscle into catchment areas."

The league table evaluates 163 grammar schools across eight categories, including academic results, university progression, class sizes, and attendance.

RGS received a "very good" overall rating, The Telegraph’s highest, something which the school say reflecting strong academic outcomes and a broad co-curricular offering.

They recorded an average class size of 19.6 students, and 62 per cent of students progressed to leading universities.
