A County Durham school has been forced to close today due to 'health and safety reasons' linked to water coming through the roof and into the alarm system.

Sedgefield Primary School, on Rectory Row, says the fire brigade were called last night (October 20) due to the alarm system going off.

In a statement to parents, the school said the building is "currently not secure or safe enough to allow our children in."

"I have had to decide to close school today due to safeguarding and health and safety reasons," a spokesperson said in the statement.

"The fire brigade was called to school late last night as the alarms had been triggered.

"Due to the heavy rain, water has been coming in through the roof and down into the alarm system, disabling it and causing a hazard.

"The school is currently not secure or safe enough to allow our children in.

"We are waiting for our security team to assess the situation this morning.
