Work to transform part of Darlington town centre has been paused.
Darlington Borough Council has confirmed that the demolition work on Skinnergate has been halted while it seeks further approvals for the project.
A council spokesperson said: “Demolition has been paused whilst further approvals are sought. Assuming permissions are granted, demolition should restart by the end of December/start of January and be completed soon after.
“We will be also tendering for building work to start once the demolition is complete.”
The scheme will see new homes, flats and retail units built on the site, while a fire-damaged building at 12 Skinnergate is also set to be restored.
Plans were originally approved in August 2021 and involve the demolition of buildings at 13–18 Skinnergate and 2 Raby Terrace.

Work on the latest phase officially started earlier this year, with the council saying the redevelopment would take around 12 months to complete.
The redevelopment has already faced setbacks.
Last year, the council confirmed the scheme had been delayed after part of the project had to be redesigned because of heritage concerns.
