North East pub to transform into ‘stadium-style’ sports bar in £280,000 refurb

The Poverina Inn in Middlesbrough is undergoing a major transformation into a 'stadium-style' sports bar thanks to a £280k investment by Marston's.

A Teesside pub is kicking off a major transformation as it prepares to reopen as a 'stadium-style' sports bar.

The Poverina Inn in Middlesbrough is getting a £280,000 makeover before reopening as a Marston’s 'Grandstand' pub on Wednesday, November 11.

The pub closed on Monday (October 19) for work to create a "stadium-style experience" for sports fans.

Rob Robson, operations manager at Marston’s, said: "We are so excited about the plans to re-open as a Grandstand pub.

"We know our locals are sporting mad and can’t wait to be able to offer them the best possible experience when they can visit us again."

The pub will feature tiered seating, huge screens, a state-of-the-art sound system, and upgraded technology to deliver an immersive live sports experience.

The beer garden will also be upgraded with new outdoor screens.

The Poverina Inn is asking locals to donate sports memorabilia, including photographs and other items, to decorate the venue and celebrate local sporting achievements.

Once reopened, the pub will show a wide range of live sport, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, and horse racing.

It will also bring back regulation dartboards and pool tables, alongside new leagues and recreational sessions.

The refreshed menu will include a 'Match Day Menu' of chicken wings, nachos and other snacks, alongside traditional pub food.

Local sports teams will be able to apply for a 'Black Card', giving them access to exclusive offers, endless chips on team nights and rewards for celebrating wins at their local pub.

The Grandstand concept follows research showing that 8.5 million people have watched live sport in pubs, while 86 per cent of fans prefer sports pubs for their atmosphere, better screens and sound, and the chance to connect with loved ones.

Marston’s selected the Poverina Inn for the transformation because of its strong connection to local sports teams, community groups, and charities.

The pub is well placed for families and sports fans alike, offering a spot to relax after a walk around nearby Flatts Lane Country Park or to catch the latest match.
