AN 18-year-old Scarborough lad has launched his own fresh fish and seafood business.

Michael Grimes will officially open the doors to Scarborough Catch Ltd today (Tuesday) in Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults.

The teenager has a passion for fish and shellfish stemming from working alongside his dad, Kev, and his uncle Mike, in their family business, Taste of the Sea Ltd, which specialises in exporting quality crabs and lobsters all over the world.

Michael was too busy preparing to launch his new business to talk to the Press yesterday (Monday) and his father Kev directed us to the All Things Scarborough Facebook group.

This, Kev said, told the whole story about Michael and Scarborough Catch Ltd, adding the group’s two posts on him had enjoyed more than 1,600 likes between them.

Through working in the family business, the family says Michael has gained invaluable hands-on experience, knowledge and a real understanding of the seafood industry.

From handling lobsters and crabs to learning the importance of quality and freshness, it’s an industry he grew to love.

Now, Michael is ready to take all he has learned and use it to create something of his own.

When the opportunity came along to open Scarborough Catch Ltd in Scarborough Market Hall on St Helen’s Square, Michael knew it was one he couldn’t miss!

The prime, town centre location with excellent facilities made it possible to bring a dedicated wet fish shop to Scarborough.

Scarborough Catch promises a fantastic selection of fresh, quality fish, freshly-dressed crabs and lobster prepared daily, ready-to-eat shellfish, plus a variety of other fresh seafood products.

The company posted on its own Scarborough Catch Facebook site: “We’re a proud local, family-run seafood business, bringing fresh fish and shellfish to the people of Scarborough and beyond.”

The family say the new venture is more than just a business, but a lifelong dream for Michael and they are so proud of him, which dad Kev confirmed briefly over the phone.

A related family business, Ros Grime Shellfish Limited, which has operated for over 50 years, posted on their own Facebook site: “Michael will also be taking over the deliveries from Ros Grime Shellfish, so our customers can continue getting their seafood delivered.

“And before anyone worries… ROS GRIME SHELLFISH ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE!

“We just believe Michael has a brilliant opportunity at the Market Hall. He’s young, enthusiastic and ready to work hard, and what better way to start out in life than by building something of his own?”

Fish lovers have welcomed Michael’s new business.

One said on All Things Scarborough: “Good luck, it’s about time we had a great wet fish shop in the town. I’ll be there to support you.”

Another added: “Good luck! It’ll be great to have a fresh fish shop back in town. We’ll be dropping in!”
