The post encouraged people to "eat the rainbow", explaining that different coloured fruit and vegetables contain different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

But the market also stressed that shopping with Durham City Fruiterers offers benefits beyond healthy eating.

"Every purchase helps support a small, independent family business," the post said.

It said buying local "keeps money circulating within our local economy" and "helps preserve the unique character that makes Durham Market Hall so special".

The market praised the trader’s "friendly service and fantastic fresh produce you simply can't beat" and urged residents to make it their "first stop" for meals, packed lunches and healthier eating.
