A beloved otter has died, leaving behind a legacy of joy and memories.

Musa, a 17-year-old Asian short-clawed otter, died at Washington Wetlands Centre (WWT) on Friday, October 16, following a brief illness.

The centre said: "We knew this day was on the horizon, but that makes its arrival no less difficult.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we sadly announce the passing of Musa, our beloved Asian short-clawed otter patriarch."

Musa was the oldest otter of his species across the whole of WWT.

The spokesperson said: "With that honour came inevitable age-related health problems and, following a short illness, we lost our boy on Friday.

"Devastated doesn’t come close to how we’re all feeling right now and we know that many of you will be just as heartbroken."

During his life, Musa was a devoted mate to the late Mimi, who they lost in 2025, and a loving father to nine cubs, including nine-year-old Buster, who remained by his side until the end.

The centre has reassured the public that Buster is now their top priority.

The spokesperson said: "He and the team have been preparing for this loss for a little while now and after taking some time to process things – and only when he is absolutely ready – we will introduce him to a new companion to share his life with."

The centre plans to celebrate Musa’s legacy by sharing photos, videos, and stories from his time at the sanctuary, and has encouraged others to do the same using #memoriesofmusa.

The spokesperson said: "But for now, rest in eternal peace darling Musa.

"Wherever you are, may the pebbles be plentiful and the minced beef delicious.

"We love you and you will be forever missed."

Supporters have flooded social media with messages of condolence and fond memories of Musa.
