Plans to turn a row of former commercial properties in Middlesbrough into student accommodation have been given the green light.

The scheme will see three neighbouring properties in the Grove Hill area converted from commercial buildings into student housing, creating a total of 11 rooms.

Associated Guest Houses Ltd successfully applied to convert 202, 204 and 206 Marton Road and reconfigure their interiors for student living.

The buildings, which have most recently been used as offices and other commercial premises, will be brought back into residential use under the approved plans.

Located on one of the main routes between Middlesbrough town centre and James Cook University Hospital, the properties are also within easy reach of Teesside University, making them a natural location for student accommodation.

The former commercial property at 202 Marton Road will become a three-bedroom student home with two cycle spaces.

The neighbouring property at 204 Marton Road will become a four-bedroom student home with three cycle spaces.

At 206 Marton Road, another property will become a four-bedroom student home with four cycle spaces.

Together, the three properties will provide 11 student bedrooms and nine cycle spaces.

Existing car-parking spaces will remain, while work on the front gardens will formalise additional private arrangements.

Planning documents state the work will be largely internal, with no significant alterations proposed to the exterior of the buildings themselves.

The approvals will bring three former commercial premises back into residential use while adding to the supply of student housing in an area already popular with those studying in Middlesbrough.

The additional cycle parking will also support sustainable travel between the accommodation, the university and the town centre.
