The new little Darlington book box where you never know what you might find

Darlington book lovers have a new place to find their next read after a Little Free Library opened on Worton Drive.

Book lovers have a new reason to stop and browse while out and about in a Darlington neighbourhood.

A new Little Free Library has appeared on Worton Drive, giving residents and passers-by the chance to pick up their next read.

Resident Jennifer Gibbard launched the community book box to encourage sharing and bring neighbours together through reading.

Jennifer, a lifelong reader, said books are best enjoyed when they are passed on rather than left gathering dust on a shelf.

She said: “I've always loved the idea of books being passed from one person to another, rather than sitting unread on a shelf.

“I love sharing, swapping and passing books on, so a Little Free Library seemed like the perfect way to turn that into something the whole neighbourhood could enjoy.”

The library is open to everyone and stocks adult and children’s books.

There is no membership scheme or formal borrowing system.

Visitors can take a book and leave one behind if they wish.

Jennifer hopes the book box will become a familiar neighbourhood feature and a welcome surprise for passers-by.

She said: “I wanted to create something small and simple that people in the neighbourhood could enjoy.

“Hopefully it will become one of those things that people just know is there – somewhere you might stop on a walk, find a book you weren't expecting, and take it home with you.”

Jennifer is documenting the library’s growth on Instagram at @wortondrivebookbox, sharing updates, new arrivals and collection finds.

The Little Free Library is now open to visitors.
