A Pokémon fan has turned her hobby into a business by opening a trading card shop in her hometown.

Sophie Golightly, from Bishop Auckland, opened the Newgate Street shop on Saturday, October 17, as wanted to launch a hub for collectors and players across County Durham.

The shop specialises in Pokémon trading cards and accessories.

Sophie’s love of Pokémon began in childhood before growing into a passion for collecting cards.

She said: "I've always been interested in Pokémon trading.

"I've played the game ever since I can remember.

"A year ago I started collecting the cards as well and I started doing a challenge on TikTok trying to collect all the Pikachu cards.

"If I don't complete it by the end of the year, I'll be giving the collection away on TikTok."

Documenting her collecting journey online has helped Sophie build a social media following and join a thriving Pokémon card community.

"Through that I've met an amazing community, been going to card shows and building really good relationships with other card shops," she said.

"I just thought I could probably do this myself.

"A lot of people said I should try and that I'd be great at opening a shop, and my social media following helps.

"I thought I'd take the leap and hopefully give back to my community."

Sophie studied sport at university before working for the NHS and launching her business.

She then decided it was time to pursue her own venture.

The public response has exceeded her expectations.

"I've had so many people getting in touch with me saying they've got some cards to donate or things they want to buy from the shop," Sophie said.
