Ripon Grammar School ranked among England’s top 50 grammar schools

Ripon Grammar School has been ranked among the top-performing grammar schools in England in a new league table published by The Daily Telegraph.

The North Yorkshire school, which offers both day and boarding places, was ranked 42nd nationally and was the only grammar school in the North and Yorkshire to feature in the top 50.

RGS scored 38 out of a possible 40 points in the ranking, which assessed 163 selective state schools against eight measures covering academic performance, university destinations, class sizes and attendance.

The school received an overall rating of ‘very good’, the highest award in The Telegraph’s assessment. The results drew on data from the 2024-25 academic year, including GCSE and A-level performance, subject choices and progression to university.

According to the league table, RGS has an average class size of 19.6 pupils, while 62 per cent of students progress to leading universities. Its A-level performance was also rated above national and local averages.

Telegraph data editor Ben Butcher said:

Grammar schools represent the pinnacle of state education in England.

With 163 of them scattered across the country, these schools are fiercely competitive, academically brilliant and so influential that they actively push up house prices as parents attempt to muscle into catchment areas.

Headmaster said he was delighted the school had been recognised among the country’s top-performing grammar schools.

Jonathan Webb said:

This result reflects the hard work and ambition of our pupils, the dedication of our staff and the support of our families.

It is particularly pleasing to see our academic performance recognised alongside the breadth of opportunities we offer as a co-educational state grammar school.

While academic achievement is hugely important, we believe a great education is about much more than examination results. We want every pupil to discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities and leave RGS well equipped for the next stage of their lives.

RGS offers a range of opportunities beyond academic study, including sport, music and drama, alongside pastoral support intended to help pupils develop confidence and independence.

Its boarding provision attracts pupils from across the UK and overseas, while its status as a state grammar school means families do not pay tuition fees.

The ranking provides one measure of the school’s performance, alongside the wider educational and extracurricular experience it offers its pupils.
