A charity has welcomed donations from across the community as the cost of providing weekly hot meals continues to rise.

HOPING York Street Kitchen, recently supported by York Vikings Rotary Club, serves around 100 people every Sunday at King’s Manor grounds.

However, the charity has seen its weekly running costs climb from £300 in 2025 to around £360, due to rising food and energy prices.

Helen Meadows, chair of trustees at HOPING, said: "All our funds come from donations – we receive no council or government funding for the work we do – so we are dependent on the generosity of individuals and organisations in the city, like York Vikings Rotary, to continue our vital work."

All volunteers give their time for free, but the charity covers the cost of ingredients, thermal supplies, and toiletries.

A recent £500 donation from York Vikings Rotary Club will help cover these costs.

HOPING also received more than £1,000 from a hospitality awards dinner after being chosen as its nominated charity by York’s hospitality association (HAY).

Ms Meadows added: "Especially, we are looking for supporters who can make a longer-term commitment to HOPING so we can secure our services to those in need into the future."
