A popular York bar has revealed plans to help mitigate the “harsh economic climate” hitting hospitality.
Eleven new guest rooms would be created above The Terrace on New Street under a proposal lodged with City of York Council.
The ground floor would stay as a sports bar and kitchen.
The business moved into the building in 2023, taking over the former All Bar One premises after relocating from its original home on Fossgate.
The proposed development aims to transform the upper levels into 11 double letting bedrooms with individual en-suite bathrooms.
These rooms would range in size from 150 sq ft to 330 sq ft.

Planning documents say the guest accommodation would “provide additional income during and beyond the current harsh economic climate being experienced by the hospitality sector”.
Owner of The Terrace Paul Gardner has 30 years experience as a York publican.
He told us last December that he faced a “monumental increase” in his business rates which jeopardised “our ability to keep the doors open for the long term”.
Distinctive windows
These new plans have been arranged to take advantage of the building’s large, distinctive front elevation windows, offering guests natural light and views across the historic street scene.
On the second floor, guests will even get views over the surrounding roofscapes, with the main and western towers of York Minster visible above nearby rooflines.
Existing facilities on the first floor, including the bar’s toilets, kitchen, plant room, and beer cellar, will all be retained.

If approved, the expansion could also lead to extended opening hours so guests and the public can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the premises.
The move is set to create approximately six new part-time jobs, which will be recruited locally.
No external alterations are planned for the 1960s building. You can read and comment on the full planning application here.
