Cocktails and hourly snow: More details about York’s city centre Christmas ice rink

More exciting details have been revealed about the pop-up ice rink coming to York this Christmas.

It was announced back in July that Thor’s Tipis will be bringing ice-skating back to the city centre – with a rink to be built on a platform at the back of York Art Gallery.

Thor’s On Ice will run from 13 November to 3 January.

And organisers of Thor’s On Ice have announced that it is teaming up with popular York restaurant Lucia this festive season.

The collaboration will bring Champagne, seasonal cocktails and a touch of Italian glamour to the new ice rink, located in York Museum Gardens.

The festive drinks menu will also feature mulled wine, mulled rosé and hot chocolate.

Taking centre stage will be Lucia’s signature Dolce Glide cocktail, a pink creation served over a clear ice cube containing a miniature pink ice skate.

Lucia’s Swinegate restaurant terrace will embrace a similar après-inspired setting for Christmas dining and celebrations.

Adding an extra touch of Christmas magic, snowfall will take place every hour, on the hour, across both Lucia’s restaurant terrace and the après bar terrace at Thor’s On Ice.

Amanda Monaghan, director at THOR’S tipi, said: “Partnering with Lucia brings another brilliant York experience to Thor’s On Ice.

“The team shares our enthusiasm for creating places where people can come together and celebrate, and their signature cocktails and festive drinks will add something really special to the rink.

“It’s a wonderful way to bring two York favourites together and make a festive visit to the city even more memorable.”

Times and prices

Thor’s on Ice will mark the return of outdoor ice skating to the heart of York for the first time since 2010. It will be covered, to keep any rain or snow off the skaters, but the cover will be transparent so people can enjoy views of this historic corner of York, next to the city walls.

The ice rink will be 4,950 sq ft, and will be big enough for 150 skaters.

Skating sessions will last 45 minutes, with tickets starting from £12 for adults and £11 for children, and family tickets from £31.50. Parent and toddler sessions will also be available alongside public skating. Book your tickets here.

Created by the team behind THOR’S tipi, which has operated seasonal venues in York since 2015, the attraction will be the brand’s first Thor’s On Ice experience in the UK.

THOR’S signature winter tipi will also return to Museum Gardens for its fourth consecutive year, offering festive drinks, local beers, seasonal food vendors and a programme of live entertainment.
