Nexus is expanding its engineering team with five new roles to support the Tyne and Wear Metro and its wider infrastructure.

The positions will contribute to the operation of the Metro network and other key assets managed by Nexus, as well as support the ongoing investment and development of the system.

Ben Brooks, head of engineering at Nexus, said: "We are delighted to be investing in our engineering team through the creation of these new roles.

"This strengthens our existing resource base in several key areas.

"We’re expecting a high level of interest.

"It’s a great opportunity to join Nexus and forge a career at one of the most exciting times in our history, as we invest in our infrastructure and get ready to expand the Metro network."

The new positions include fleet performance and reliability engineer, fire engineer, geotechnical and off-track engineer, principal architect, and principal fleet engineer.

Geotechnical and off-track engineer

The geotechnical and off-track engineer will support the principal engineer for civils and structures by providing expertise on earthworks, retaining structures, drainage, and other related assets.

This role covers capital projects, maintenance, and daily operations.

The successful candidate will work with both internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and industry standards.

Fleet performance and reliability engineer

This role will focus on asset reliability and performance within the fleet engineering team, primarily for Metro rolling stock.

The engineer will support the principal engineer by developing and maintaining reliability management systems, analysing performance data, and leading initiatives to improve reliability.

They will also assist with technical investigations and provide assurance on the performance of maintainers, manufacturers, and project delivery teams.

Principal architect

The principal architect will act as the technical lead for buildings, stations, and bus infrastructure across the Nexus network.

This role covers capital projects, routine maintenance, and ongoing operations.

The architect will ensure that all assets meet statutory, regulatory, and best-practice standards, working closely with relevant stakeholders to keep infrastructure safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.

Fire engineer

The fire engineer will oversee fire safety across all Nexus assets, including buildings, rail infrastructure, and fleet.

This role involves ensuring compliance with fire engineering standards and working alongside the QHSSE team and external partners to maintain safe operations.

Principal engineer – fleet

The principal fleet engineer will take the lead on fleet engineering matters across Nexus projects and daily operations.

Responsibilities include ensuring that all Nexus fleet assets - from the Metro’s new Class 555 trains to on-track machines and the Shields Ferry - meet all statutory and regulatory requirements.

The engineer will work closely with internal teams and external partners, particularly Stadler, to ensure safe and reliable fleet operations.

Mr Brooks emphasised the broader impact of the engineering department at Nexus.

He said: "Engineering doesn't just cover the Metro.

"We also look after all of the Nexus infrastructure including but not limited to civils and structures, buildings, overhead line, fleet, track, signalling, bus infrastructure, and the Shields Ferry.

"This is to ensure that our network runs safely and reliably every day."

The deadline for applications is Monday, November 16, at 9am.
