A mother and daughter are turning their shared passion for art into a university journey together.

Barbara and Daisy Johnston, from Ashbrooke, are studying for an MA in Visual Practice at the University of Sunderland, having recently showcased their work in the university's annual MA Degree Shows.

Barbara, 57, originally graduated from Sunderland Polytechnic in 1991 with a Fine Art degree before spending 31 years as a teacher.

She said: "I had always promised myself that I would take early retirement as soon as I was able so that I could fulfil my dream of completing my Master’s degree."

Daisy, 22, followed in her mother’s artistic footsteps and graduated with a First in Fine Art from the same university in July.

It was her decision to continue her studies that inspired Barbara to finally pursue her own long-held ambition.

Daisy said: "Me and mam have wanted to do our MA together for so long and we are so glad we get the chance.

"We are so lucky to have this time together and want to make it the best we can."

Barbara said studying alongside her daughter has been a special experience.
