Tractors took to the roads of North Yorkshire on Sunday (October 18) for a special Halloween charity run in memory of a much-loved agricultural contractor and Young Farmers' Club president.

Organised by Thirsk Young Farmers' Club, the event raised money for Parkinson's UK and club funds, which help subsidise membership fees for young people.

This year's event held particular significance as members paid tribute to their late president, Jenny Kidson, who died shortly before Christmas last year after living with Parkinson's disease.

Jenny, a well-known agricultural contractor, had been involved with the club for more than 40 years and was remembered as a driving force behind its success.

The Halloween tractor run set off from Thirsk at 10am, with a route taking participants through Sandhutton, Kirby Wiske, Maunby, Burneston, Carthorpe, Kirklington, Ainderby Quernhow and Baldersby.

The procession then continued through Baldersby St James before a scheduled lunch stop, followed by Rainton, Dishforth and Dishforth Camp.

The afternoon leg took tractors through Sessay and Dalton before returning to Thirsk.

Organisers had made a special appeal for owners of Ford and New Holland tractors to join the run, alongside other makes, in recognition of Jenny's lifelong love of blue tractors.

The tribute followed a similar display at this year's Borrowby Show, where a special parade entitled '78 years of blue' celebrated Jenny's life and her contribution to the agricultural community.

Several tractors previously owned by Jenny featured in that parade, which marked her 78 years and her longstanding involvement with the show.

Thirsk Young Farmers have already raised an impressive £14,500 for Parkinson's UK through a charity auction held earlier this year in Jenny's memory.

The auction was one of several events organised to celebrate a woman who played a central role in the club and the wider farming community.

Jenny's brother, Sandy Kidson, previously recalled how his sister and her close friend Joan Ryder helped save Thirsk Young Farmers when membership dwindled to just six people.

Their efforts helped transform the struggling organisation into a thriving club, with Jenny continuing to support and encourage generations of young farmers.

Speaking previously about Jenny, fellow club member Rachel Trewhitt described her as "Thirsk Young Farmers through and through".

She said: "She was a force to be reckoned with, but also the loveliest person you've ever met."

The annual tractor run has become a popular event for the club, with last year's fundraiser, held in aid of Friends of Lambert Hospice, attracting 183 tractors.

Sunday's Halloween event continued that fundraising tradition while providing an opportunity for the farming community to come together and remember a woman who dedicated so much of her life to supporting young people in agriculture.
