Temporary traffic lights will remain on a Middlesbrough road until next year as major gas pipe replacement works get underway.

Motorists travelling through Linthorpe are being warned of potential disruption as Northern Gas Networks (NGN) prepares to begin a three-month project on Roman Road.

Rolling temporary traffic lights will be in place between the junctions of St Barnabas Road and Oxford Road from Monday, October 26, with work expected to continue until the end of January 2027.

The lights will be manned during peak periods to help keep traffic moving, while on-street parking along Roman Road will be suspended for the duration of the works.

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

The work will see ageing metal gas pipes replaced with more durable plastic ones, with NGN saying the investment is needed to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for residents and businesses in the years ahead.

Gavin Stewart, site manager at Northern Gas Networks, acknowledged the disruption the work could cause.

He said: "We understand that work like this can be disruptive for residents, businesses and people travelling through the area, and we’re grateful to local people for bearing with us while our teams are on site.

"By replacing the ageing metal pipes with more durable plastic ones, we’re investing in the network beneath Linthorpe’s streets to help keep local homes and businesses safely and reliably connected to gas for many years to come.

"We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption and complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible."
