AN opportunity to shape public accountability has opened up.
Durham County Council is inviting applications for independent members to join its Audit Committee, which plays a key role in scrutinising financial management and governance arrangements.
Cllr Darren Grimes, deputy leader of Durham County Council and cabinet member for finance, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to be directly involved in helping with reviewing and providing assurance on our finances and governance arrangements.
"We’d welcome applications from people of all life backgrounds as we want to make sure our committees reflect the communities we serve."
The Audit Committee reviews how the council and its cabinet manage risk, finances and broader governance.
Applicants should be able to take an unbiased, evidence-based approach to decision-making and be willing to participate actively in committee meetings.
While experience in audit, assurance or financial management would be an advantage, it is not essential.
An understanding of corporate governance, risk management, or experience in complex organisations is also desirable.
The position is voluntary and will run for a four-year term from April 2027 to April 2031.
The committee meets six to seven times a year at the council’s offices in Durham City. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Application packs are available by emailing democraticservices@durham.gov.uk.

Interviews for the role are expected to take place on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November.
