A former bank could be turned into a new entrance to Barnard Castle under plans to attract more visitors to the historic site.

The former NatWest building on the market place, which closed in May 2018, could house ticket sales, a shop, café, tourist information and displays about the castle.

A new opening in the garden wall could provide direct access from the building into the castle grounds, while the garden could be used as a seating and education space.

The upper floors of the former bank could also potentially provide overnight accommodation.

Durham County Council is developing the proposals with Raby Estates, English Heritage, Barnard Castle Town Council and Historic England.

It comes as the entire castle is on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register.

Parts of its walls overlooking the river have deteriorated, while trees and other vegetation would need to be removed so their condition can be properly assessed.

A wider restoration would depend on significant external funding.

The project could also open up more of the castle grounds for community events, education and recreation.

Cllr Karen Allison, Durham County Council's cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said the authority was "exploring ways that we can safeguard the future of the Castle in Barnard Castle and regenerate the site for future generations".

A public drop-in event will be held at the former NatWest building on Wednesday, October 21, from 1pm to 3pm and then 5pm to 7pm.

An online consultation will remain open until November 4.
