Amanda Owen plans unusual sleeping arrangements for children at Anty John's

Amanda Owen has revealed an unusual idea for sleeping arrangements at Anty John's farmhouse as her family continues its ambitious restoration project in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Shepherdess and her nine children have spent three years helping transform the centuries-old property near Ravenseat into a family home.

But rather than filling every room with modern furniture, Amanda has been looking to the past for inspiration.

The latest series of Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids reveals how a family visit to Beamish Museum sparked ambitious plans for a traditional cupboard bed.

The unusual sleeping arrangement is among the ideas being considered as the family begins turning the farmhouse's restored interior into somewhere they can spend time together.

What is the cupboard bed Amanda Owen wants at Anty John's?

A cupboard bed, sometimes called a box bed, is a traditional enclosed sleeping space built into wooden furniture or the structure of a room.

Historically, these beds were used in some rural homes to provide a sheltered sleeping area while making practical use of limited space.

Their enclosed design could offer greater privacy and help retain warmth in homes that were often difficult to heat.

For the Owens, the idea fits with the wider challenge of restoring Anty John's while preserving something of its original character.

The family has been determined to bring the old farmhouse back to life rather than replace its historic features with an entirely modern interior.

The episode also follows another significant stage of the renovation, with floorboards finally arriving at the remote property on the back of a tractor.

The Owens have already spent years repairing the building and tackling the difficulties of working in one of the most exposed parts of the Yorkshire Dales.

Who will stay at Anty John's farmhouse?

Although plans for the cupboard bed are taking shape, one much bigger question remains unanswered.

Amanda has revealed that the family still has not decided who will eventually live permanently at Anty John's.

Speaking at Our Farm Next Door: A Behind-the-Scenes Celebration at Everyman Northallerton on September 30, she explained that belongings had been moved into the property but no firm decision had been made about its future occupants.

Amanda said: "It's not been decided yet about who will live at Anty John's."

She added: "We've taken up loads in the Land Rover and moved some stuff in, but we still don't fully know who is going to live there."

Part of the uncertainty comes from the changing lives of her children.

Some are interested in further education, others are starting businesses and several remain closely involved with farming.

That means a house originally intended to provide a future home for the family must now accommodate plans that are still evolving.

The proposed cupboard bed is another example of the practical and sometimes unconventional ideas being explored as the renovation continues.

Whether the finished feature becomes a regular sleeping space for one of the Owen children remains to be seen.

But it offers a glimpse of Amanda's determination to combine the traditions of an old Yorkshire farmhouse with the needs of a modern family.
