A once bustling café in Acomb that closed last month is now up for sale.

The Old Greengrocer Café on York Road is now on the market for £29,950 leasehold.

It has been listed on RightBiz by John R Hornsby Chartered Surveyors.

The café, which was situated in the heart of the community, was known for its rustic ambience, with it gaining a place in the Good Food Guide.

The cafe first opened eight years ago by Sarah and Darren Mahoney. Then, last December Ricky and Naomi took charge.

The premises, which have been described as "beautifully fitted out," come with a variety of catering equipment and are included within the asking price.

The café used to operate six days a week, but was allowed to open seven days if required.

It also had a front forecourt seating area, covered by a large canopy with individual heaters for the cooler months.

The premises are surrounded by a number of well-known retailers including Thomas the Bakers, Cooplands, Boots, Heron Foods, and several local independents such as Bluebird Bakery, Acorn Meats, and The Hand.

The lease for the property is held for 10 years from December 2025 at a rent of £18,744 per annum, plus insurance of £469.44 per annum.

The rent will be reviewed every three years after December 2026.

Sales particulars listed online say the café was once a thriving business, taking an average of around £5,000 per week.

It served full meals, cakes, hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and more, and was consistently one of the busiest in Acomb.

The new proprietor has the opportunity to start afresh and create a thriving business for a "very realistic" asking price, which includes all fixtures and fittings as seen.

The premises have an overall floor area of approximately 506 square feet.

The premises are shown on the Valuation Office Rating website as having a rateable value of £12,500.

Under current arrangements for small businesses, reduced rates should be payable of around £796 per annum.

However, interested parties must check this information prior to proceeding, RightBiz added.
