A former church building in York has been put up for sale.

Located in Clifton, just half a mile north-west of the city centre, the former Clifton Methodist Church is available with vacant possession.

Offers in excess of £600,000 are being invited by Leeds-based property agents Lambert Smith Hampton, who add the church offers a range of redevelopment possibilities, subject to planning permission.

The church, which has also been used as a polling station, closed at the end of April with the York Methodist Circuit blaming falling membership and the costs of running such a large, ageing, building.

The church, designed in the Neo-Gothic style by architect Edward Taylor and built in 1909, is a two-storey property with later rear extensions.

It includes a main church room, office and meeting rooms, kitchen, and WC facilities.

The 0.1-hectare (0.248-acre) site also includes block-paved parking for eight to 10 vehicles.

The building is arranged across two floors, with three separate stairwells, one to each corner of the building.

It is located less than a mile from York railway station and within easy reach of several bus routes.

The property agents say its location, size, and existing layout make it suitable for a variety of potential uses, subject to planning.

It sits around half a mile from York Minster and the heart of the city centre.
