We tried a shop given a one-star food hygiene rating and was surprised at how tasty the homemade cakes were.

Haworth Wholefoods received the rating in January, with inspectors citing the sale of out-of-date products, mould in several rooms, and the absence of a food safety system for the third consecutive year.

T&A reporters decided to sample three of the Main Street shop’s most popular cakes - millionaire shortbread, lemon drizzle, and carrot cake.

Millionaire shortbread

The millionaire shortbread was the standout favourite.

One reporter said: "It’s got a really good texture and flavour.

"It’s just the right level of moist."

Another commented on the texture of the chocolate, saying: "The chocolate was really rich.

"It had a lovely base, as well.

"Not too hard and not too soggy."

Lemon drizzle

The lemon drizzle cake received mixed feedback.

One reporter said: "It’s got a nice sharp flavour – it’s very tangy."

But another reporter found the icing too sweet.

She said: "The bits on the top are too sweet, almost."

Carrot cake

The carrot cake was generally well received, though the icing divided opinion.

One reporter said: "I like the crunch of the walnut in the icing, which meshes well with the softer texture of the cake."

However, another described the icing as bland and lacking flavour.

She said: "I'm not massive on the icing.

"It doesn't really taste of much and it's a bit bland.

"I don't think it did anything to add to the overall cake."

Overall, the cakes were well-liked by the team, despite initial concerns about the shop’s hygiene standards.
