Look inside the luxury County Durham hall with a remarkable 200-year history

Nestled among 350 acres of private woodland and rolling countryside, Burnhopeside Hall Estate offers guests the chance to stay in a Georgian country house with more than 200 years of history woven into its walls.

The County Durham estate now welcomes families and groups, but its story began in the early 1800s with a major figure in British railway history.

Designed by North East architect John Dobson on the site of Burnhope Farm, Burnhopeside Hall has overlooked the Durham landscape for more than two centuries.

Dobson’s Georgian style shaped many of the region’s best-known buildings, and the hall remains a fine example of his work.

Among its most notable residents was William Hedley, the pioneering railway engineer credited with developing the revolutionary steam locomotive Puffing Billy.

Hedley spent the last six years of his life at Burnhopeside Hall, where he died in January 1843.

As resident engineer at Wylam Colliery, he designed locomotives that replaced horses hauling coal wagons.

George Stephenson is often called the father of the railway, but Hedley also pioneered steam-powered locomotion.

Today, the original Puffing Billy is displayed at London's Science Museum, while a working replica operates at Beamish Museum.

In the 20th century, local entrepreneur Neil Harmer bought the hall; his dance halls became well known across County Durham and Northumberland.

After Harmer died in the early 1950s, his family turned the property into a tea room and later a country hotel.

After falling into decline, the hall was extensively restored in the early 2000s by the current owners’ late mother, who preserved its historic character.

Burnhopeside Hall has reopened as an exclusive self-catering retreat.

The hall sleeps up to 12 guests and has seven reception rooms, open fires, a large kitchen, four en-suite bedrooms and a games room.
