An historic pub is set to reopen after lying vacant for more than three years in a North Yorkshire coastal town.

The Jolly Sailors, part of the Samuel Smith brewery estate, close to Whitby Harbour, along St Ann’s Staith, is set to reopen under new management.

The pub closed its doors on July 1, 2023 but will welcome customers in the coming weeks.

Built around 130 years ago, the traditional pub features an open fire and cobbled outdoor area overlooking Whitby Harbour, with views to Whitby Abbey.

Previously, the pub offered food from its two first-floor dining rooms.

The building also features accommodation for the owner above the pub.

News of The Jolly Sailors’ opening has been warmly welcomed by residents.

It comes after the brewery launched a campaign to reopen its empty pubs.

A representative said: “These are not just pubs.

“They are inns with stories with stories to tell, places where good beer, good food and good hospitality have been part of life for generations.”
