A commemorative oak tree planted in honour of a royal visit has today been planted at Duchy College in Harrogate.

The tree was gifted by King Charles III during his visit to the college in May as part of a limited series of 80 commemorative oak trees, ahead of His Majesty’s 80th birthday in November 2028.

This was the first time the school has welcomed a reigning monarch.

Joanna Fox, principal of Duchy College, said: "We are delighted to have been gifted this oak tree, which will take pride of place in our grounds and provide a lasting reminder of what was a very special occasion.

"His Majesty’s visit came at a particularly significant time in our school’s history, as we were embarking upon an exciting new chapter as Duchy College.

"The tree also carries a wonderful sense of history and symbolism, having been planted in the first year of Duchy College.

"It will grow and flourish alongside generations of pupils, becoming a lasting part of our school community.

"There was a tremendous sense of pride among the staff and pupils involved in His Majesty’s visit.

"It was a privilege to welcome him to our school and a moment I know will be remembered fondly by everyone who had the opportunity to be part of it."

During his visit, King Charles spoke with prefects about balancing A-level studies with extra-curricular activities and commented on the beauty of the college’s Harrogate setting.

The College Chapel Choir performed With A Voice of Singing and the Sevenfold Amen, while Year 6 pupils sang selections from their school production of Looking Good, Robin Hood.

Alastair Martin CVO, chief executive and clerk of the council at the Duchy of Lancaster, said: "The planting of this oak is a fitting way to mark what was a very special day for Duchy College earlier this year.

"As the school begins an exciting new chapter, we hope the tree will grow alongside the school and provide a lasting reminder of His Majesty’s visit for generations to come."

Duchy College, formerly Harrogate College and later Harrogate Ladies’ College, was founded in 1893.

Originally established as a boys’ school, it later became a girls’ school before expanding to offer co-education from pre-school through to prep.

The college is currently transitioning to become fully co-educational for pupils aged two to 18, with boys joining Year 7 and Year 12 in 2026.

With more than 130 years of history, Duchy College is known for academic excellence, personalised pastoral care, and a broad co-curricular programme.

The college says it is now entering an exciting new era while building on its long-standing traditions.
