Bradford mum helps inspire families across UK to get moving

A MUM from Bradford is helping to inspire families across the UK to get moving.

Jegashree Packiyaraj is supporting the government’s Let’s Move! campaign, which encourages children to be more physically active.

She lives in Bradford with her husband and sons Rohit, 13, and Rakshith, 10.

Ms Packiyaraj said: "While the family enjoy being active, with both parents working full-time and the boys balancing school and busy schedules, life can sometimes get in the way.

"They enjoy organised activities such as Bowling Park Junior Parkrun in Bradford on Sundays, where the boys run and also do volunteering before the run starts, or sometimes the boys will play badminton.

"Getting involved in Let's Move! has helped the family discover that there are lots of other activities that can be done in short ten-minute daily bursts, rather than always needing to find the time for organised sports.

"Simple activities at home or in local green spaces can provide an opportunity to switch off, have fun and spend quality time together."

The government launched the Let’s Move! campaign in November 2025 in response to figures showing that fewer than half of UK children are meeting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

The latest phase of the campaign introduces the New Moves Club, aimed at children aged seven to 11.

The New Moves Club shows that it's not about being good at a sport or activity; it's about joining in and having fun.

In Bradford, 58 per cent of parents said they do not consider themselves sporty, and 94 per cent avoid sports because they fear not being good at them.

The campaign aims to break down these barriers and show that movement is for everyone.

A short film to launch the campaign features EastEnders actress and mum Charlie Brooks, who said: "Children don't care whether you're sporty or good at something; they just want you to join in with them.

"That's something I've learned both as a working mum and an auntie."

Ms Brooks appears in the film alongside fitness coach Joe Wicks, who meets parents across the UK as they try new activities with their children.

Mr Wicks said: "Getting kids active doesn't need to mean expensive kit or spending hours mastering a skill.

"It can start with just ten minutes of movement and trying something new together as a family.

"I always say it doesn't matter what it looks like – if you're all having a laugh, getting your bodies moving and getting a boost, then you're doing it right."

The campaign is supported by Active Bradford.

James Brown, chief executive, said: "We're delighted to be supporting the Let's Move! campaign once again this autumn which is helping to inspire children and families across Bradford District to enjoy the benefits of being physically active."
