A BUSINESS leader is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate for his outstanding service.

Jonathan Thornton OBE, former chair of the University of Huddersfield Council, will be awarded the honour during graduation ceremonies taking place from November 9 to 13, 2026.

Mr Thornton has contributed 20 years of service to the university, joining its governing council in 2006 and becoming chair in 2019, a position he held until July 2026.

Professor Bob Cryan CBE DL FREng, vice-chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, said: "Jonathan has made an outstanding contribution to the University over the past 20 years.

"His wise counsel, sound judgement and unwavering commitment to Huddersfield have been invaluable as we have developed into an internationally recognised institution.

"Beyond the University, his generosity and dedication to supporting local businesses and communities exemplify the very best of civic leadership.

"I am delighted that we are recognising his exceptional contribution with this honorary degree."

During his tenure, the university achieved Gold ratings in all three categories of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and was named the UK’s most improved university in the 2025 QS World University Rankings.

In June 2026, Mr Thornton was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to higher education.
