An American man travelled over 5,000 miles to get his hands on a North East treat.

Viral food vlogger Alex visited County Durham's Beamish Museum to try some of its old-fashioned sweets, with one treat quickly becoming a surprise favourite.

The online food vlogger, known as Best Bites With Alex, posted the Beamish edition of his North East food vlogs from the museum near Stanley, County Durham, following previous visits to Newcastle, Teesside and Darlington.

First posting trendy food spots across Los Angeles, California, Alex began his North East travels in September, sampling some of the region's most-loved delicacies.

In a video posted to social media on October 4, the viral food vlogger can be seen in Beamish's 1950-themed area trying their traditional chocolate and sweets.

He said he was interested in the area's history and industrial heritage, and had also tried the museum's fish and chip shop off-camera, telling fans in the comments how much he loved them.

Alex's first taste of Beamish was its milk chocolate, which he said was only his second taste of "proper" British milk chocolate.

He found the "melt-in-your-mouth" treat delicious, adding: "Brits, you guys do chocolate like nobody has done chocolate before."

Cinder toffee was a favourite of Alex's, he said, praising the sweet's crunchy texture.

"It pops in your mouth - there's a proper, proper crunch in there," he said.

The viral food reviewer also tried some white chocolate mice, and called the museum's coconut macaroons "light and sweet."

Viewers poked fun at the Liquorice Allsorts' traditional flavour, causing the American's face to drop slightly, although he stayed polite, labelling them tasty.

Recommended by staff, Alex ended his confectionery review with some rhubarb and custard boiled sweets, which he described as "proper, old-fashioned sweets."

Alex's earlier vlogs featured Taylor's Traditional Butchers in Darlington, where the sausage roll made the biggest impression during his tasting of local specialities.

He also visited The Merlin in Billingham to sample an iconic Teesside parmo, vowing to open his own restaurant upon returning to the United States.

The creator's visit prompted locals to name their own favourite traditional sweets and give recommendations for future visits.

One commenter wrote: "Other old-fashioned boiled sweets I recommend are worth having include cola cubes, lemon sherbets, strawberry bonbons and lemon bonbons.

"And chocolate limes, which are lime green on the outside with chocolate on the inside!"
