A Ferryhill couple have celebrated 60 years of marriage with a special visit from their town's mayor.

Jim and Ann Mitton welcomed Ferryhill mayor Councillor Curtis Bihari on Thursday, October 15, for their diamond wedding anniversary.

Cllr Bihari gave Mrs Mitton a bouquet of flowers and Mr Mitton a whisky tumbler.

Cllr Bihari said: "It was lovely to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Mitton.

"We had a great chat about how our families had crossed paths over the years in Ferryhill.

"With Jim and my Granda both working at Black & Decker and Ann being friends with nana when they both lived up Dean Bank."

Mr Mitton, 83, was born in Ferryhill Station and left school at 15 to work for RW Toothill Furnishing in Newton Aycliffe.

He then worked for 33 years at Black and Decker in Spennymoor before retiring in 2001.

Mrs Mitton, 81, was born in Dean Bank and worked at 60 Minute Cleaners before joining the clothing factory there.

She later worked as a receptionist at Chilton Surgery for around 17 years.

The couple met as teenagers in their village and have a daughter, Nicole, and a granddaughter, Annabelle.

After marrying, they lived in Parker Terrace for five years before settling in Dean Road, where they have lived for 55 years.
