A countryside café tucked away just off the A1 in Northumberland has earned a near-perfect rating from visitors.

Its homemade breakfasts, cakes and welcoming atmosphere attract customers and keep them coming back.

Rocking Horse Café & Gallery is based at Rock Midstead Farm, near Alnwick, around 800 yards from the A1.

Despite its rural location, the café has attracted more than 940 reviews on Tripadvisor, where it holds an overall rating of 4.9 out of five.

It has also received a Travellers' Choice award for 2026, recognising businesses which consistently receive strong reviews from customers.

The café combines homemade food with a gallery, countryside views and a particularly dog-friendly atmosphere.

Its gallery features photographs of Northumberland by former jockey Richard Dunwoody, while visitors can also make use of garden seating overlooking the surrounding countryside.

There is even a dog agility course, making it an unusual stopping point for people travelling with their pets.

But it is the food which appears to be one of the biggest attractions.

What do visitors say about Rocking Horse Café?

A customer visiting in September described the café as a regular stop whenever their family travelled to Northumberland.

They called the Rocky breakfast "the best breakfast I've had in the area by a mile", while also praising the owners for their welcome and attention given to visiting dogs.

Another visitor, who stopped on the way home from a Northumberland holiday in July, was similarly impressed.

They praised the full English breakfast, adding: "The toasted stottie puts all other toast in the shade!"

The homemade cakes were another attraction, with the customer buying some to take home after their meal.

Another July visitor, who discovered the café after poor weather disrupted plans for a boat trip from Seahouses, was impressed by its countryside setting and food.

After enjoying soup with a cheese scone and a jacket potato, they described the venue as "a treasure of a cafe".

The café's dog-friendly atmosphere also attracted praise, with customers highlighting the welcome given to their pets and the presence of the resident dogs.

Northumberland café praised for its afternoon teas

Afternoon tea is another popular offering.

A customer celebrating their 60th birthday in July described visiting the café on consecutive days, first for lunch and then for a pre-booked afternoon tea.

They praised the selection of sandwiches, rolls, quiches and cakes, explaining that the portions were substantial enough for some of the food to be taken away.

Another visitor celebrating a birthday in May described receiving a particularly warm welcome, with staff even joining in a birthday celebration.

The café's dog-friendly approach is another recurring theme.

Customers have praised the resident dogs and the welcome given to their own pets, although one previous reviewer raised concerns about dogs being close to diners and the limited choice for vegans.
