Students from Mumbai to study in York says Mayor during India trade mission

A new scholarship for students from Mumbai to study in York has been launched by the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith.

The Mayor’s Gateway Scholarship, funded by the University of York Mumbai, will initially support two students with the opportunity to study in the region.

It also includes work experience, offering insight into York and North Yorkshire’s business and industry.

Mayor David Skaith said: “York and North Yorkshire’s trade mission is an important step in building relationships and deepening our links in India.”

He added: “I am delighted to champion the Mayor’s Gateway Scholarship, providing students with the opportunity to develop their education across two continents and two vibrant cities.”

The University of York Mumbai welcomed its first students in September, with courses in creative industries, business, and computer science with artificial intelligence and cyber security.

A new research institute, the Institute for Good Society, has also been launched at the campus, focusing on global challenges such as artificial intelligence, urbanisation, and climate change.

Professor Lindsay Oades, provost of the University of York Mumbai, said: “We aim to provide our students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to study and work anywhere in the world, and so scholarships like this are significant in giving students international experience.”

The scholarship was announced during a trade mission to India, where Mayor Skaith and business leaders are promoting economic opportunities in York and North Yorkshire.
