A housing association has responded to calls to reconsider removing a memorial for a young Bradford man who died earlier this year.

It honours Joshua Oxley, 22, of Woodside, who died in a crash on Great Horton Road in June.

The memorial, located on The Square in Woodside, has become a focus of support and remembrance for his family, friends, and the wider community.

An online petition has been launched after Incommunities confirmed it was considering removing the memorial.

The housing association says it is meeting with his family about what a fitting and lasting tribute could look like.

'Not suitable as a long-term memorial'

A spokesperson for Incommunities said: "We understand losing Joshua has been devastating for his family and friends, and how much this memorial means to them and the wider community.

"The current gazebo is not a suitable long-term memorial.

"We’re speaking to the family about what a fitting and lasting tribute could look like, possibly something closer to where they live.

"We want to make sure any decisions about its future are handled sensitively, which is why we’re meeting the family next week to discuss this further before any next steps are agreed."

The collision involved an electric-assisted pedal cycle and a moped near Windermere Terrace.

At his inquest opening in July, it was said that he "lost control of the cycle for an unknown reason".

Joshua suffered life-threatening injuries and died in Leeds General Infirmary the following day due to a head injury sustained in the crash.

At the time, two men, aged 22 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. They were released on bail while investigations continue.

What does the petition say?

The petition, which was created by Rochelle Page, states: "Joshua Oxley was a vibrant young man whose life touched so many within our community.

"His unexpected passing left a void in the lives of his family and friends, but it also brought together a tight-knit community who cherished him deeply.

"In the wake of this tragedy, a memorial was erected in The Square, Woodside, BD6, as a beacon of love, remembrance and solace for all those who held Joshua dear.

"This memorial is not just a place comprised of flowers, photographs and letters; it is a vital part of the community's landscape.

"It stands as a testament to the positive influence Joshua had on countless people, reminding us of the kindness, joy, and warmth that he emanated every day.

"The memorial has become a gathering place where the people who loved Joshua can visit, reflect and keep his memory alive.

"Sadly, we have been informed that Incommunities is considering its removal.

"This decision weighs heavily on the hearts of those who visit The Square regularly to honour Joshua."

The petition argues that removing the memorial would ignore its "profound emotional significance" and calls on Incommunities to reconsider.

It suggests the housing association work with the community to maintain the site as a "respectful and well-kept sanctuary."
