Bradford eye hospital launches new treatment for common cause of sight loss

Optegra Eye Hospital Bradford has started offering a therapy for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

A new treatment is giving hope to thousands living with sight loss across Bradford.

Optegra Eye Hospital Bradford, based in Apperley Bridge, has started offering a therapy for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects nearly 32,000 people across Yorkshire.

Dry AMD causes gradual loss of central vision and is a leading cause of sight loss in people over 50.

Mr Saruban Pasu, an ophthalmic surgeon and AMD specialist at Optegra, said: "Dry AMD is the most common version of this disease, but until recently patients have only been given advice on diet and lifestyle, such as to stop smoking.

"At Optegra we always strive to be pioneers and bring new, proven treatments to help people improve their eyesight.

"This is one example of a treatment which is having excellent outcomes, and we are delighted to invest in the local community to provide this treatment in Yorkshire."

The new therapy, eye-light, uses LED light to stimulate cells in the retina and slow vision loss.

Jade Whalley, regional hospital manager, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer this service to people in the local community.

"Dry AMD can have a significant impact on a person’s day-to-day life and independence."
