ON this day last yer, a West Yorkshire Police officer was honoured with the King’s Commendation for Bravery after her heroic actions during a life-threatening incident at a McDonald’s in Bradford.
PC Rhona Adams received recognition for her quick thinking on June 10, 2024, when she saved a woman engulfed in flames inside the restaurant's disabled toilets.
Upon arrival at the busy McDonald’s on Ingleby Road, PC Adams was confronted with a horrifying scene: a vulnerable woman had set herself alight and was in a highly distressed state.
Without hesitation, PC Adams bravely smothered the flames with her bare hands while instructing restaurant staff to bring a fire extinguisher, which she used to successfully put out the fire.
Following the incident, she provided first aid to the woman and comforted her as they awaited an ambulance. Thanks to PC Adams' quick response, the woman sustained only first and second-degree burns.
Craig Nicholls, Chair of West Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “Rhona’s commendation stands as an example of the dedication, professionalism and courage shown by officers throughout West Yorkshire.”
Earlier in the year, PC Adams also received the Police Bravery Award at the West Yorkshire Police Awards.
