HUNDREDS gathered to mark Black History Month at an event honouring African heritage and community.

The celebration took place at Bradford Arts Centre on October 9 and was organised by Black and Interracial Women in Bradford (BIWIB) under the theme '100 Years of Black History' in Honouring Our Communities.

Dr Osemeike Gloria Eyieyien, founder and CEO of IAccend Initiative CIC and convener of the event, highlighted her vision of fostering meaningful relationships, strengthening community connections and creating spaces where people feel a genuine sense of belonging.

The programme included theatre, poetry, music, and dance, and was coordinated by BIWIB programme manager Mojolaoluwa Oni.

A highlight of the day was 10 Decades, a stage play produced and directed by Ehijie Jeffery Ebhodaghe, which explored historical experiences and cultural identity through dramatic storytelling.

Cllr Chris Herd, Lord Mayor of Bradford, was among the notable guests, alongside Daniel Bates, CEO of Bradford UK City of Culture, and Jonathan Triffitt, Dean of Bradford Cathedral.

Also in attendance were Ghufrana Qureshi, a domestic abuse consultant and community leader, and Pedi Obani, associate professor of law at the University of Bradford.

The event aimed to reflect on the importance of documenting history and amplifying community voices.
