A North East club's football fans can learn lifesaving CPR skills and claim free match tickets in a campaign to build confidence in responding to cardiac arrests.

Hartlepool United is teaming up with University Hospitals Tees (UHT) to mark Restart a Heart Day with a free CPR event on Monday, October 19.

The drop-in session runs from 10am to 1pm in the Hart of Our Club 1908 Lounge at Hartlepool United Football Club.

Teresa Pounder, education and training partner at University Hospitals Tees, said: "As a person who has administered CPR to a member of my close family, I can attest that you never know when you may need these skills.

"By working together as a community, we can help ensure more people have the confidence to act in an emergency and potentially save a life."

Everyone who takes part will receive two free tickets to Hartlepool United’s game against Hornchurch on Saturday, October 24.

No previous experience is needed and there will be no formal classroom teaching.

Fans can stay for just five minutes, meet mascot H’Angus the Monkey and learn skills that could save a life.

The partnership supports the Health and Social Care Academy’s and Hartlepool United’s commitment to sharing practical health skills with local organisations and communities.

Keith Nobbs, manager of United for The Community, said: "A cardiac emergency can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time and at United for the Community, we ensure that no one has to face that moment alone.

"By joining the Restart a Heart campaign, we are equipping our neighbours, families, and friends with the simple, life-saving CPR skills needed to protect one another.

"When we learn together, we save lives together."

Ms Pounder and her team will deliver more Restart a Heart training at other locations in the coming weeks.

Sessions are planned at a football camp for parents and carers on Monday, October 26, and at a disability football carers’ group on Tuesday, October 27.

The academy will also attend Hartlepool United’s game against Wealdstone on Saturday, November 14, giving fans another chance to learn CPR.
