Plans for new offices in Darlington town centre have moved a step closer.
Darlington Borough Council, working with developer Cityheart, is proposing new offices on the former Sports Direct site off East Street, behind Crown Street Library.
The council says the offices would offer modern workspace for businesses wanting to move near the new Government building off Brunswick Street.
The former Wilko building across East Street would be demolished, with the land initially used for car parking until further redevelopment plans are ready.
Darlington Borough Council said the former Wilko could be demolished or converted for retail and leisure use after estimating that it could cost between £300,000 and £350,000 to buy the lease.
Council leaders previously backed a funding plan for a proposed four-storey office building on the former Sports Direct site, approving £410,000 towards professional services and fees ahead of planning approval.

Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said professional and financial services firms showed "increasing demand" for space near the new Darlington Government Hub.
He said bringing more workers into the town centre would boost footfall and help keep Darlington "well used, vibrant and attractive for many years to come".
