How Amanda Owen's son Reuben turned childhood passion into his own business

manda Owen's son Reuben turned his childhood love of diggers into a machinery business and television career after finding fame on Our Yorkshire Farm.

Amanda Owen's son Reuben has transformed a childhood fascination with diggers and machinery into a business of his own, while becoming a television star in the process.

The former Our Yorkshire Farm favourite grew up at Ravenseat in Upper Swaledale, where viewers watched him develop a passion for working with tractors, excavators and other equipment.

But what began as an interest in machinery on the family's remote farm has since developed into a working business tackling jobs around the Yorkshire Dales.

Reuben has also become one of the most recognisable members of the Owen family, appearing in his own television programmes and continuing to help his parents and siblings.

His journey is one of the clearest examples of how Amanda and former husband Clive's nine children have begun developing independent careers.

Reuben Owen's love of machinery began at Ravenseat

Viewers of Our Yorkshire Farm watched Reuben grow up surrounded by the practical demands of farming.

Life at Ravenseat meant dealing with difficult terrain, unpredictable weather and machinery essential to keeping the remote farm operating.

Reuben showed an early interest in mechanical equipment and became increasingly involved in practical work.

Amanda recently revealed how she and Clive encouraged that interest by giving him the opportunity to use an old digger.

Speaking at Our Farm Next Door: A Behind-the-Scenes Celebration at Everyman Northallerton on September 30, she explained how that opportunity had developed into something much bigger.

Amanda said: "We gave Reuben an old digger, he's made a business out of it and now works with some of his brothers."

She compared his success with that of younger sister Edith, who has developed a cream tea business at Ravenseat after being given a small serving hatch.

For Amanda, both ventures illustrate the importance of allowing her children to pursue their own interests.

How did Reuben Owen start his business?

Reuben's interest in heavy machinery gradually developed beyond the work required on the family farm.

He began taking on practical projects and established his own machinery and contracting venture.

The work has involved using heavy plant equipment in the demanding landscape of the Yorkshire Dales.

His skills have also become the focus of television programmes documenting his working life.

After appearing in Our Yorkshire Farm, Reuben starred alongside his father Clive in Beyond the Yorkshire Farm: Reuben and Clive.

He subsequently fronted Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, which followed him taking on jobs with machinery and working alongside friends and family.

The programmes gave viewers an opportunity to see how the young farmer's enthusiasm for equipment had developed into a career.

They also showed the challenges involved in carrying out practical work in remote rural locations.

Reuben Owen still helps his family at Ravenseat

Although Reuben has developed his own working life, he has continued to maintain close links with the family farm.

He has been involved in work connected with Anty John's, the centuries-old farmhouse Amanda and Clive have spent three years restoring.

His practical skills have also proved useful when other people have found themselves in difficulty.

Amanda recently revealed that Reuben had come to her rescue after she became stranded during a snowstorm while returning from Kendal in Cumbria.

And it is not just his family who have benefited from his experience.

Wise Owl Films, the production company behind Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids, has revealed that Reuben has repeatedly helped television crews stranded in difficult conditions.

Speaking at the Northallerton event, creative director James Knight described Reuben as someone the production team could rely on when things went wrong.

He said: "He was our knight in shining armour at times."

On one occasion, Reuben helped after a member of the camera team became stranded in floodwater while travelling in an electric van.

He also assisted production staff who became stuck in snow during filming in the Yorkshire Dales.

Amanda joked about how prepared her son always seemed to be.

She said: "He's always in his hi-vis, bless him, and always on hand to help anyone."

Reuben Owen's career away from Our Yorkshire Farm

Reuben's growing independence reflects a wider change taking place within the Owen family.

The children who first became familiar to viewers through Our Yorkshire Farm are increasingly pursuing different interests and careers.

Some remain closely involved in agriculture, while others are considering university or developing their own businesses.

Amanda has spoken proudly about seeing her children make their own decisions.

Reuben's journey has also helped establish him as a television personality in his own right, rather than simply one of Amanda and Clive's nine children.

His programmes have focused on the practical challenges of machinery work, while also showing his continued connection with the countryside in which he grew up.

And despite developing a business and television career, Reuben has remained available to help his family when needed.

For Amanda, his progress demonstrates what can happen when a child's enthusiasm is encouraged from an early age.

What began with an old digger at Ravenseat has become a career which has taken Reuben far beyond the farm, while keeping him firmly connected to the Yorkshire Dales.
