From fuel pumps to hot tubs: County Durham's relaxing spa near the A66 in old garage

A former petrol station near Barnard Castle has been transformed into The Garage Spa, an award-winning County Durham retreat with a unique motoring-themed twist.

A former County Durham petrol station and garage has been transformed into one of the region’s most unusual spas.

Nestled in the village of Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, The Garage Spa occupies a site that once served motorists travelling along the A66.

Rather than erase its past, the spa has embraced its motoring heritage, creating a luxury retreat themed around vehicle repairs, servicing and road trips.

Visitors who arrive today are greeted not by fuel pumps and mechanics, but by hot tubs, treatment rooms and relaxation areas.

The spa, which opened in 2012, describes itself as offering guests a wellbeing "MOT", and guests are encouraged to "put on the brakes" and unwind.

The venue sits alongside The Morritt Hotel and has developed a strong reputation since its transformation from roadside garage to luxury spa.

Facilities include treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, relaxation lounges, a thermal suite, sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool.

The spa has also been awarded a five-bubble rating by the Good Spa Guide.

Travellers appear impressed by the results.

On TripAdvisor, the attraction holds a rating of 4.1 out of five from more than 300 reviews and has earned a Travellers' Choice award.

One recent visitor described having "the best time", praising the "gorgeous surroundings", friendly staff and relaxing facial treatment.

Another reviewer said every aspect of their visit was "pleasant and relaxing", adding that the experience had been enhanced by recent refurbishment work.

Others highlighted the quality of the facilities and treatment packages, with one guest describing the spa as "super relaxing" and praising both the staff and scenic Teesdale setting.

What makes The Garage Spa stand out is its unlikely story.

While many spas are housed in country mansions or purpose-built wellness centres, this one has its roots in a former filling station, turning an everyday roadside stop into a destination for luxury and relaxation.

For those seeking a countryside escape, it may be one of County Durham's most unexpected success stories: an award-winning spa where the only thing being serviced these days is the guest.
