The baronial Portmore House was designed by Scottish architect David Bryce and is built of red sandstone.
It features a central tower, turrets on the western elevation, crow-step gables, and sash and case windows.

The mansion’s South Wing was partially rebuilt following a fire in the 1980s and has retained many period features, including wood panelling, fine cornicing, panelled doors, fireplaces, and the original hall organ.
The house includes principal reception rooms, a "most welcoming" kitchen, a billiard room, a playroom, and a two-bedroom caretaker's flat.
