David Sumner, sales manager at Christmas Tree World, said: "Falling on the first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the traditional Christmas countdown for many households, Sunday, November 29th is the ideal date for putting up your Christmas tree for 2026.

"This date marks the natural starting point for festive decorating and also gives you plenty of time to enjoy it before Christmas Day.

"Getting a head start on holiday planning can be a great way to establish your own family traditions early on in the festive season.

"It can also make a significant difference when it comes to avoiding the rush of last-minute shopping for gifts, and avoiding the dreaded scramble for holiday food supplies."

While November 29 offers a traditional starting point, Mr Sumner said the most important thing is to decorate your tree when it feels right for you and your household.

He said some people start as early as October, with Halloween-themed trees now becoming a growing trend.

For those planning to follow the suggested date, Christmas Tree World has shared a checklist to ensure a smooth set-up.

The first step is to measure the space where the tree will go.

Mr Sumner said: "Measure the area where your tree will be placed to avoid any surprises.

"The most popular Christmas tree height in the UK is between 6ft-7ft, which is an ideal height for most homes with 8ft ceilings."

It’s also wise to check your decorations in advance.

He said: "Take your decorations out of storage now and check for any damaged ornaments.

"This will give you plenty of time to replace anything that’s past it’s best."

Testing your lights is another key step.

Mr Sumner said: "Plug in your Christmas lights to check they are working properly before putting them on the tree.

"If you’re buying new lights, check that they’re suitable for indoor use and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions."

Finally, for those with artificial trees, it’s worth assembling them early.

Mr Sumner said: "Assemble it and carefully spread out the branches to give it a fuller, more natural look.

"This can take longer than expected, particularly with larger trees, so doing it in advance means you won’t be rushing on decorating day."
